Preparing for the arrival of a new baby is emotional for any parent. When that arrival comes earlier than planned with health concerns, families can quickly feel overwhelmed – especially when they live far from the care their child needs.
Last fall, Matthew began complaining about a pain in his side, the pain would temporarily subside and then return and was spreading down his leg and to his back. At one point the pain got so bad, Matthew ended up leaving school early.
Four year old Jack Rowe faced his first metabolic crisis at 10 months old after a prolonged viral illness that led to severe dehydration and lethargy. With alarmingly high lactate levels and low bicarbonate, he was admitted to the hospital in Corner Brook before being airlifted to St. John’s, where the family was advised to prepare for the worst.
